A chargeback is a process where a payer, the cardholder, disputes a transaction and asks their card issuer to reverse it. If the issuer accepts the chargeback request and it is not successfully defended, the funds are returned to the payer. This action cannot be stopped or reversed and you, the merchant, will be charged additional fees on top of the transaction amount. #### Chargeback reasons include - Stolen or unauthorised card use - Damaged or poor-quality goods - Items/services not as described - Items/service not received Chargebacks are consumer rights protected by law. If you win the dispute, only the transaction amount will be returned without the additional fees. #### Why should you avoid chargebacks? Chargebacks may cost you more than refunds because you lose: - The product (in case of tangible goods) or service time.  - Processing fees and penalties related to chargebacks - Time and effort handling disputes - Your brand’s reputation In simple terms, chargebacks represent a significant cost and operational burden for merchants. #### Keep control – encourage refunds Refunds give you a chance to fix problems and keep customers happy.  Whenever possible, encourage customers to request a refund first or find ways to resolve any issues related to the products or services provided.
