> [!info]+ Jammed can collect membership fees for you automatically through Stripe. Set a price on the tier, assign the customer, and Jammed handles the rest.
Each tier decides how its members pay. You can have some tiers billed automatically, some paid (but where you handle the money), and some free, all at the same time.
## Before you start
Automatic subscriptions need Stripe connected as your payment provider in [[Payment Settings]]. If Stripe isn't connected, the tier form tells you:
> Connect Stripe in your payment settings to offer automatic subscription payments.
Payments go to your own Stripe account, the same one that takes your booking payments.
## Choosing how a tier is paid for
On the tier form there's a **Membership payments** section:
> How members pay for this tier. With a Stripe subscription, Jammed collects the payment automatically on your connected Stripe account and keeps the membership up to date.
![[payments.png]]
**How members pay** has three options:
- **Free** - the tier costs nothing. Perks apply as soon as you assign someone.
- **Paid outside Jammed** - you arrange the money yourself, however you already collect it. Jammed just tracks who's a member. Perks apply as soon as you assign someone.
- **Automatic Stripe subscription** - Jammed collects the fee on a schedule and keeps the membership in step with whether the customer is paying. **We charge you a fee to use this** - but it's free for the first 5 subscriptions.
For a Stripe subscription you also set:
- **Price** - the flat amount members pay each billing period. It has to be more than zero.
- **Billing schedule** - **Monthly** or **Yearly**. One tier has one schedule, so if you want to offer both, create two tiers.
The price is in your studio's currency, and it's a flat rate. Allowances and discounts are set separately on the same tier, so a tier can charge £25 a month and include 10 hours of booking. See [[Membership Tiers]].
## Which payment methods members can use
There's a studio-wide setting on the membership settings page:
> Choose which payment methods customers can use when paying for a membership subscription. This applies to every tier.
You can tick cards, Link, Bacs Direct Debit, SEPA Direct Debit, US bank account (ACH), BECS Direct Debit, Canadian pre-authorised debit and Cash App Pay, depending on what your Stripe account supports.

> [!tip] Leave every box unticked and Stripe picks the best payment methods to offer automatically. That's the recommended setting.
## What happens when you assign someone to a paid tier
**The member is emailed and asked to set up payment.** They get an email with a link to their profile, where they press **Start subscription** and pay through Stripe's checkout. If they haven't done it after two days, Jammed sends one reminder. There's no further chasing after that.
![[payment-ask-email.png]]
> [!warning] Perks are on hold until the first payment clears. The membership exists and shows in your dashboard, but the customer gets no discount, no allowance, no members-only access and no payment-term override until they've actually subscribed. The email tells them this: "Your membership benefits are on hold until your payment is set up."
**Or you can start it immediately from a card they already have on file.** If the customer has a stored card, the assign form offers:
> Start the Stripe subscription now by charging one of the customer's stored cards. Only applies when the chosen tier is billed by Stripe; the customer can change the card or cancel from their profile afterwards.
Pick a card and Jammed charges the first payment there and then, so their perks start straight away.
## Auto-enrolling into a paid tier
You can set a paid tier as your automatic enrolment tier, and everyone new gets asked to set payment up just as if you'd assigned them by hand. The setting says so:
> This tier is billed by Stripe, so payment will be asked for when a new customer is created.
Bear in mind what that means in practice: every new customer who registers gets an email asking them to pay for a membership they didn't ask for. That's the right behaviour for a studio where membership is how you work, and quite wrong for one where it's an optional extra. **If in doubt, leave auto-enrolment on a free tier and assign paid tiers by hand.**
## Ending a paid membership
There are three ways one ends:
- **You remove the membership.** The subscription is cancelled immediately and no more payments are taken.
- **The member cancels from their profile.** It runs to the end of the period they've paid for, then stops.
- **Your Stripe retry settings give up on a failed payment.** Stripe cancels it and Jammed follows.
## Subscription states
The customer's record shows where they've got to. On the customer page you'll see **Subscription:** followed by one of:
| What you see | What it means | Perks? |
| ---------------------- | ----------------------------------------- | ---------------------- |
| Payment not set up | Assigned, but they haven't subscribed yet | No |
| Paying by subscription | Everything is working | Yes |
| Payment past due | A payment failed and Stripe is retrying | Yes, they keep working |
| | | |
![[status.png]]
Members see the same thing on their own **My membership** page, as **Not started**, **Confirming**, **Active**, **Payment overdue** or **Paused**.
## When a payment fails
Stripe retries the payment on the schedule set in your own Stripe dashboard. Jammed doesn't chase separately.
**While Stripe is retrying, the member keeps their perks.** Their page says:
> Your card was declined. We'll try again on [date], and your perks keep working in the meantime.
**If Stripe gives up, the membership pauses and perks stop.** Their page says:
> We tried your card several times with no luck, so your perks are on hold. Pay what's outstanding and everything comes straight back, nothing is lost.
They can pay the outstanding amount or update their card from that page, and their perks and allowance come back immediately.
How long a member sits in retries before pausing is entirely down to your Stripe retry settings, so if you want that to be faster or slower, change it in Stripe.
## What members can do themselves
From **My membership** in their account:
- **Start subscription**, if they haven't yet
- **Manage my subscription**, which opens Stripe's billing portal where they can change their card, see their invoices, and cancel
If a member cancels through the portal, it takes effect at the end of the period they've paid for. They keep their perks until then, and Jammed sets the membership to end on the same day.
## Changing a tier's price later
You can change the price whenever you like. Existing members stay on the price they signed up at, and the new price applies to people who subscribe from then on.
What you **can't** change while members are actively subscribed is the billing type or the schedule. The form says:
> Members are paying for this tier by subscription, so how it is billed cannot change. You can still change the price; existing members stay on the price they signed up at.
If you need to restructure, create a new tier and move people across. See [[Assigning Members]].
## Starting to charge for a tier that was free
Switch a free tier to a Stripe subscription and every current member on it is emailed and asked to set payment up.
> [!warning] Their perks stop until they do. Give people some warning before you make this change, because the first they'll otherwise know is an email asking for money.
## Moving someone between paid tiers
Their subscription moves with them. The difference for the current period is prorated onto their next invoice rather than charged immediately, and they're emailed to say so:
> Any difference for the current billing period is adjusted automatically on your next invoice.
Moving someone from a paid tier to a free or off-site one cancels their subscription immediately and the membership carries on unbilled. Moving someone the other way, from free to paid, asks them to set up payment, and their perks pause until they do.
The same applies when you move a group of customers in bulk. The preview tells you how many of them pay by subscription before you commit.
## Removing a membership
Removing or deactivating a membership cancels the Stripe subscription immediately. No further payments are taken. This is the way to end a paid membership, since these tiers don't take an end date.
> [!warning] There's no refund or part-refund of the current period. If someone has just paid for a month and you remove them on day three, Jammed doesn't return anything. Refund them from your Stripe dashboard if that's what you intend.
If Stripe refuses the cancellation for some reason, Jammed leaves the membership in place rather than removing the perks while the money keeps going out, and tells you what went wrong.
## Emails members receive
These are sent automatically to the member. They can't be turned off or reworded.
| Email | When |
|---|---|
| Set up payment for your membership | They're put on a paid tier without a subscription |
| Your membership is still waiting for payment | Two days later, if they still haven't |
| Your membership is set up | Their first payment clears |
| Membership payment receipt | Every successful payment |
| Your membership payment failed | A payment fails |
| Your membership has changed to [tier] | You move them to a different tier |
| Your membership is ending soon | Their subscription is set to cancel at the end of the period |
| Your membership has ended | The subscription actually ends |
A couple of things these don't cover:
- **Removing a membership yourself doesn't email the customer.** If you take someone off a tier, tell them.
- **Nobody on your team is emailed about any of this.** All eight go to the member only. Keep an eye on the customer list for anyone stuck on "Payment not set up".
